CURLING ETIQUETTE

Curling is governed by rules, but how you conduct yourself while playing is also important. It is well detailed in the Player's Code of Ethics which is part of the Curling Canada Rule Book (See Rules section)

Player Ethics

  • I will demonstrate good sportsmanship.
  • I will conduct myself honorably, both on and off the ice.
  • I will never deliberately break a rule of the game, but if I do, I will come forward.
  • I will never act in a way that makes it appear that I am trying to intimidate or demean my opponents, teammates, or officials.
  • I will interpret the rules of the game impartially and never forget that they exist so that the game is played in an orderly and fair manner.
  • If I violate the code of ethics or the rules of the game, I will humbly accept any consequences that a governing body, regardless of the level of curling, deems appropriate.

Here are some ways to follow curling etiquette:

  • Shake hands with opponents before and after each game. (COVID - Now greet each other without contact, or by tapping the brooms).
  • Opponents spin a roulette wheel at the start of the game to determine last stone advantage (Covid - Now league officials can assign advantage to each game or you can use an online tool on your phone (justflipacoin.com)).
  • When the opposing team's players get ready to throw, stand to the side of the track on a single line between the playing lines. Don't move until after the stone is released.
  • If you are next in line, you may stand on the curb behind the starting blocks while remaining silent and out of sight of the thrower.
  • Only the captain and vice-captain may stand inside the playing line. They must be still and position their brushes so as not to interfere with or distract the player who is about to throw the stone.
  • Wear clean shoes that are appropriate for the ice surface.
  • Be ready to play when it is your turn to deliver a stone.
  • At the end of an end, all players must stay outside the circles until the vice-captains of both teams agree on the score.
  • After the delivery, avoid dragging your hands and knees on the ice to avoid damaging the ice.
